Math Problem Who can get it right.

Two spiders walk across the xy-plane. The x and y coordinates of the first spider at time t seconds are

x = 10 + t and y = t2 - 4 t + 17
The x and y coordinates of the second spider at time t seconds are

x = 2t and y = 4 t - 12

The paths of these two spiders touch at one point -- find that point! Be sure to explain your reasoning along with giving your answer.

Hint: The two spiders do not get to that point at the same time!

RAID0,1 or 5 though?

JP

This reminds me of all the problems in algebra that I used to get half credit for because Id get the right answer but the teacher didnt like my way of manipulating numbers. I didnt do it "her" way so my right answer wasnt right.

I had the same problem John. The teacher didn't like how I got to the right answer either. Funny thing is, I wasn't any good at algebra, but I used to help my girlfriend with her trigonometry home work.

And then there was the time in QPS class when I got sent out for a similar question about the weight of a falling cat. The dude laid it all out and the class was sitting there very quiet and I raised my hand and said

"what color is the cat?"

fun, fun.

question...is that t squared on the y equation of the first spider, or 2t

SPOILER

my thoughts...
I don't think they ever cross! Solve the x equations for t. You know the x's will equal if they cross. This gives t=10. Plug 10 into t for the y equations and they don't equal the same thing.(whether it's t squared or 2t)

EDIT....not going to delete my erroneous conclusion. reread the question..where do they cross, not when are they in the same point at the same time. I'll try again...
