As far as I have ever read or heard, all processors must have a small amount of thermal compound on the core of the cpu..this is to assure heat transfer from the core to the heatsink.

Some heatsinks (retail aftermarket types) come to users with a thermal pad attached..most home builders remove the pad and clean it up good and put a dab of thermal compound between the heatsink and cpu core.

But the P4 doesn't have an accessible core as such, much like the later AMD K6es (you could remove the heat spreader with a razor blade and hammer, but don't try it on a P4!) Just put a little paste in the middle of the chip and stick the heatsink on. I guess you could use whatever goop comes with the heatsink, but most people will recommend that you ditch that and get some better stuff like AS3 or Coolermaster compound.

LOL..this will teach me to steer clear of Intel cpu threads. I have never seen a 'modern' cpu without an exposed core...the early 386 / 486 all had the core internal I guess, then the K6-2 series AMDs etc., now they are back to enclosing the cores?..sheese..what is this hobby coming too.....

I've seen some reviews and nanotherm pcm+ seems to be the best all around. Just as good as AS3 but easier to apply and remove.

Yep no exposed core on any recent Intel chip---

Probably the reason your "expert" friends said it wasnt needed was the retail chips come with a hs/fan with a "use or void your warranty" pad applied to it...

im running a P4 2.6 and i just used the stock thermal pad i never get over 32C so i guess its not a huge issue with a P4
