Connection Sharing Help

I'm sure this question has been asked before and I Searched for it but I dont have the time to be looking for it right now.

My question is...

I have a DSL modem and a Switch. If one computer is connected through the switch, the other can't be.

Says something about a hardware issue.

If I purchase a router will that work as a gateway to connect both computers through the DSL modem at the same time?
