Media Need (free) Anti-Virus Software

I recently upgraded the cpu and mobo on my computer, and added 2 sticks of Corsair DDR3200. Last night, I upgraded to Windows XP Pro. Everything works fine, but I did discover that my Norton SystemWorks 2000 will not work with my new OS. XP told me it wouldn't when I had it scan my system prior to upgrading, so I removed it.

Needless to say, I've taken a big hit in the wallet. I also paid tuition for my 2 college bound teenagers. Is there a good FREE antivirus program, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a program? I feel pretty vunerable right now, without some form of protection.

Thanking all in advance

Robert

Second that on AVG from Grisoft... seems to work well, though the free edition does not update very often, once a month I think.

I second that.
I personally use Norton but have heard good things about AVG.
Trendmicro has a on-line scan that works well if you have problems as well.

EDIT, I THIRD that then

actually if you go into the settings, you can change the options to update the database after a certain amount of days

WOW! Thanks for the fast feedback. I'll check it out! Looks like I'll be staying home today, my 12 year-old is sick. Nothing serious. She can watch cartoons, and Dad gets to play on his computer

I just went to their website, and they mention (in red) that it can't be installed on any network environment. I have a home peer-to-peer network, using Linksys. Both wired and wireless. Can I still use this app?

It will still work, but you are expected to pay for it.
