I upgraded from a working OS. That wasn't my original intention, and I decided that if I ran into difficulties, I could reformat and do a fresh install. I had everything backed up.
I let XP analyze my system and create a report. I followed those guidelines and removed a couple of programs and drivers. I had downloaded the XP versions of those programs and drivers first. I then had XP do a "Dynamic Upgrade", connecting with the internet, to obtain the latest XP Pro updates. The rest was straight forward. The install was smooth. When it was complete, I installed the XP drivers for my video card, sound card, and scanner. I also reinstalled the programs I had removed earlier, and applied the XP updates to them. Total time elapsed was under 90 minutes, including the Microsoft activation.
Although it was getting late, I did run several of my applications, especially 2 of my favorite games, and they ran flawlessly. My DSL connection worked fine, and my kids, who were using the internet on their computers, didn't miss a beat on our home network.
With the weekend here, I'll be able to play around and get to know this new OS better. I like what I see so far
