Systems BF 1942 crashes while loading

As an early birthday present, my brother gave me Battlefield 1942 with the Road to Rome expansion pack. I got it all installed, downloaded and installed the 1.45.18 update (all 107Mb of it ), and went through the setup for graphics, controls, etc.

Decided to try quick battle, just to check it out and get a feel for the controls. The loading bar gets about 3/4 of the way done and then it crashes to the desktop.

I checked the log files, and this is what's in there:

Debug assertion failed!

Current confile:
This is the only game that I have that doesn't work. Nothing is overclocked right now, running the latest Hyperion drivers, latest Catalyst drivers, etc.

What does "Debug assertion failed!" mean?

Anybody know of a way to get this game working?

System Specs:

Abit KD7-RAID
XP2100 Tbred B
1Gb Crucial PC2700
Sapphire Radeon 9200 DV

Windows XP Pro SP1a
VIA Hyperion 3.45 drivers
ATI Catalyst 3.6 reference drivers
Rage 3D Tweaker installed, but not overclocking

I've tried every resolution and color bitrate on the menu too

what kind of 9200 is it? Is it Pro? LE?
I have the LE one from Sapphire and i have no problems with the game, y dont you try uninstalling, then reinstalling the game without the patch, if it works without the patch, then try it with the patch, might have been a one time only mistake.
Its either that or its another part of your computer, video card most likely though.

*EDIT*
it might be the rage tweaker, thats rage3d right? i had some problems with it too, it doesnt really do wonders on anything for me.

Well, technically the newest ATI drivers are Catalyst 3.7 as of typing this. Sapphire has not yet released 3.7 drivers. ATI Retail drivers will still work with your Sapphire card, however. However, Sapphire's 3.7 drivers will be optimized for your card.

If you feel like it, you can update to the newest Catalyst from ATI.

If you are even more adventurous, you can install the customized Omega Drivers (Catalyst). However, note that you should probably remove Rage3D tweak, as Omega adds his own tweaks with the driver.

Another thing to try... check out your event logs (in Administrative Tools in Control Panel). See if any other errors (or more detailed errors) are showing up.

Lastly, if you have mutiple profiles on your computer (WinXP), you can try logging off your current user, and trying a different user. If it works (after switching users), then you might be able to isolate the cause of the problem.
