2 network connections and 2 NICS

I live in an apartment, and includes ethernet access gets about 15k download and 10k upload simultaneously. Because the up time is sparatic, I bought a cable modem because its a lot faster and a lot more reliable. I have a computer with an onboard ethernet and I also have a NIC installed. What happens if I plug both in(assuming the internet is working on both connections? Can I control which program uses which network connection?(like if I want program XYZ to only use the apartment connection and I want program ABC to use the cable modem connection)

Each ethernet device (the onboard NIC and the NIC card) will have their own IP address. Unless your internet provider allocates more than one IP address to you, you will not be able to use both NIC devices simultaneously with the same provider. If you had two internet providers, or two separate accounts (two IP addresses) with one provider... maybe that would work... but, I wonder how each instance of your browser would "know" which NIC IP address to use.
