windows file protection

After watching video clips (especially .avi/divx) files, I usually can't delete them right away. I've checked task manager for video players that could still be running but nothing is there that I can see.

What's up with this file protection and how can I just delete what I want and not worry about this ? The command prompt delete only *sometimes* works and I'd rather not have to do that all the time.

Oh yes, I'm running XP Pro.
