My computer shown the message "SMART failure predicted on Primary Master: @#~%·" Warning: Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent." It was 7 or 8 months ago.
Today my little baby has showed the SMART message again... but I HAVE to think that it was my windows, cause I have scanned the smart report with a program and it says everything is OK. It could be a false alarm, couldn't it??

SMART is a disk monitoring tool and operates independently of your OS.

The smart thing to do is back up and go get a new drive.

I read the message can be produced by the OS or some programs, and twice I received the SMART warning Windows has executed "something" that crashed the system. I love my hard disk!!

Well, I have just tested my hard disk with the software I found in the link and it says OK. The temperature is good as well.

I'm sure it'll be just fine. There's nothing to worry about, nothing to worry about....

SMART should be DISABLED on stand-alone systems. See www.rojakpot.com 's BIOS FAQ.

It could be a random error message, but I'd keep a close eye on the drive.

Run the drive manufacturer's drive fitness program. If there really is a SMART error, it'll give you an error code.

Neither Western Digital nor Maxtor have given me any problems with a SMART error code before, and I'm pretty sure none of the other companies will either. If you have a credit card, ask for an advance RMA so they'll ship their drive first. That'll give you time to copy off the data from your dying drive and then erase it with something like Autoclave.

I disagree with Zepper, I think that SMART should always be turned on. It's designed to give you advance warning that your drive is about to fail before it does. I've heard of a slight performance penalty, but I've never noticed it before.

I hope my hard disk is ok... I'll wait and if I get another SMART warning I'll back up all my data, anyway I have 2 hard disk drives and I have backed up some important files.

I have tested my hard disk with Active SMART, it says everything's OK, it has everything in green but an unknown attribute (ID CA) is in red. That soft says "1 SMART attribute changed. SMART reported good status" so I don't understand what the red attribute means...

Do you know where can I see the SMART "normal" values?
