Systems Old DB program has me confused

Hi all,
I'm having a problem with an old (98) DOS program that I need to edit the .dbf files on. I can open and edit them in excel with no problem.
My problem is that when I try to save the files, the program wont read
the new .dbf file. I have tried saving it as Database II, III, and IV without any luck. Anybody know how I can edit this file and resave it without the errors?
I dont know if it helps, but the other files in this program are .mem and .ntx. Anyone know what program can help?

Being able to edit these files will save my guys a months worth of work. Please...any suggestions will help.

If it's too vague or you need more info, let me know.

They do sound like DBase files. Although I haven't heard or used it since college days.

Which program won't read the .dbf files, DBase? Excel?

Basically the program saves the info to the .dbf files,

I can reopen the .dbf files in excel, but when i try to save them it appears that it wont save them correctly, at least the software program wont recognize it once it's been modified by excel. Regardless of the format I save it to in Excel.

Are there any .dbf "formats" that excel wont save as?
Or is there any way I can find out what program was used to build this program?

the "software program" being the same program that originally saved information to the .dbf file. Once the .dbf file is "edited" the "software program" freezes up when trying to modify the .dbf file

Ugh I hated dbf files

Is the app written in clipper or foxpro?

Here are a few dbf utilities you can try.

We used one long ago in a previous job, but can't remember the name of it

I'm thinking it was made with clipper. But not really sure. (New to DB's)

Thanks for that site. It looks like it might have what I'm looking for as far as editing. A couple programs right off the bat look downloadable.

filetype shows up as FoxBase+/dBASE III PLUSE

yet when I save it as dBASE III, I always get an error from the program still. Am I missing something?
