P4 800FSB MoBo 533. Processor runs at low speed

Hi

I am building a new computer and this is the second one I am building. I got a Gigabyte GA-8SQ800 (533FSB), P4 2.4C 800 FSB and DDR2700 512 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9000. I am trying to tweak with the AMIBIOS to get the processor running at full 2.4 GHZ but it wont go above 2 GHZ. I cant increase the frequency to more than 166 and computer wont start if I increase it. I think the processor multiplier is fixed at 12 as I dont see it in the BIOS to adjust it. I suspect that the 533 FSB MOBO and the PC2700 RAM are the reason that I am not able to get the processor running at full 2.4GHZ. Can anybody throw some light on this and suggest any solutions. Grateful for all your help.

ThankYou

That board doesn't support the 800 bus so your stuck at 533. there is no way to unlock the multiplier so at 533 you will run around 1600mhz. overclocking the fsb from 133 to 166 will get you up to 2 gig, but if you can't slow down the memory it won't run stable. i don't know the details of how the board will adjust memory speed and timings, but you won't get to 2.4 without a board that supports the 800 fsb (200mhz fsb times 12 multiplier = 2400)

Thanks RacerX. I think I will sell this CPU and buy a 533 CPU.

No problem. If you like to overclock, then what about maybe selling the mobo and getting one with 800 fsb support. that chip should run well into the 3 gig range. my 2.4c is running rock solid at 3.3gig with room to spare and that's with a nice quiet zalman cnps7000a-cu. just a thought, depending on your budget and which will sell better, etc..

I would also suggest that you trade-in your mobo instead of your cpu. Even if you don't overclock, you'll have better upgrade options with the new mobo and 800 fsb cpu.
