Can anyone top this?

I tried my hand at getting my own site set up and running on my computer... I got defeated horribly.

So I've been searching endlessly for a good host, and the best I could come up with was Hostica with their S-Class hosting setup. Below I'll give you all the details about what you get in this package and how much it will cost.

All of this is for $8.95 a month.

No setup fee.

Disk Space: 350 MB

Monthly Traffic: 10,000MB

POP3/SMTP Accounts: 200

Redirects ($0.10 /mo): Unlimited

Aliases ($0.10 / mo): Unlimited

Mail Lists ($2.00 /mo): 1

Autoresponders ($0.50 /mo): 2

Mail Domain Aliases: Yes

FrontPage Extensions: Yes

Perl/cgi-bin: Yes

CGI Mapping: Yes

PHP: Yes

SSI: Yes

Redirect URL: included (dunno what that is)

MySQL Databases: 3

PGSQL Databases: 1

Domains: 5 included

Third Level Domains: 1 (dunno what that is either)

Webalizer Statistics: Yes

Transfer Log: Yes

Referrer Log: Yes

Agent Log: Yes

Error Log: Yes

Modlogan Statistics: Yes

SSL Server (requires certificate): Yes

Directory Index: Yes

Throttle Control: Yes

mnogoSearch: Yes

SiteStudio: Yes

HSphere Control Panel: Yes

phpBB: Yes

Phone Support: Yes

OK, now that I've listed everything... I don't know what 2/3 of that stuff means. Most of it probably doesn't matter either, but I listed it anyway.

So my question is... Does anyone know of a host with those features that I can get for $8.95 a month or less? I think Hostica has a really good service here, but I need to see if anyone has any cheaper solutions? For the most part I think most of the stuff they listed on their plan was just smoke and mirrors so to speak, but I wouldn't know since I have no idea what most of it means.

I don't think I'll be able to find those features for less than $8.95 /mo, but I thought I'd ask because you people know what you are talking about when it comes to computers.

The cheapest way would just try and try again till you set it up on your machine. It took a couple days to configure Apache. Around a week for MySQL and PHP. But now it takes me like an hour to configure and install everything

DragonZ - ask Hostica two questions:

1. Do you get your own dedicated IP address, or are they using Host Headers.

2. How many web sites are on each server.

If this is a serious web site (ie your business, not a fan site or a blog), you wan't your own IP address. You also don't want to be lumped in with 250, 500 or 1,000 other web sites on the same server. Your performance will be abismal...

Rand the problem with hosting your own server is bandwidth usage. We happen to host our own server, but on a 128k capped upload. It sucks, period. Works fine for webpages and such, but downloads are terrible.

And there is no way I can afford to purchase a bigger pipe, the $9 a month for a host would be considerably cheaper if you need a pipe that doesnt suck.

There no way you can host your own site for under $10 a month - most ISP's charge that for a static ip plus you have to consider the cost of your hardware and compare the bandwidth and reliability you can get through a hosted site.

I host my own site but if we didnt need big bandwidth for many other reasons I wouldnt do it.

Its cool to have your own box but if you dont have the time, interest, or money to learn how to use IIS or Apache and get a bigger pipe then pay the $10.
