OS on a Pen Drive?

I was wondering if it was possible to run an os entirely from a pen drive? I have a 256mb usb pen drive which isn't used as much as I thought it would be, and I was curious if there was an os small enough to fit on it?

it would be cool to bring an os with me especially for those whose computer will not boot; I've heard of Peanut and Knoppix...are they small enough for a 256mb drive?

thanks to all who respond!

You can fit linux on a floppy

although its typically only used for a router or firewall
so very bare bones!

Not sure if you can use USB as a boot device?
Hmm.. dunno

morphix is about 180 mb, as for boot to a usb pen drive. it is possible (have a guy who does it at work, its really slow) but not a lot of motherboards support this

I believe that some people do run linux distros from Pen Drives, I would think one of the major things to check is if your MB will boot from USB devices. Its also worth remembering that CF devices are only good for a finite number of writes, so sticking a swap file on one would be a fairly bad idea.
