i tried ftp'ing to it.

It doesn't pick it up, so you might have a wrong address.

Ok now it says....
STATUS:> Connecting to earth.prohosting.com
STATUS:> Connecting to earth.prohosting.com (ip = 65.113.119.147)
STATUS:> Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message...
but then it gets stuck right there......

I really have no luck with Cute FTP,it does the same thing to me.I have had much better results with FTP Voyager, and FTP Commander is a good free program. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles voyager does, but for a basic client it works great

Does Earth Prohosting say anything about if you should be using passive mode or not? Or if you need an ftp client that does SSL Encryption?

Try turning passive mode on or off and see if you can find out if they require SSL or not.

If you just want to try a different FTP client I really recommend this one:

http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

It's free (as in speech and beer) and it works really well. Two Tiger paws up!

kinda big butt

here is what their email says to use...
FTP Hostname: earth.prohosting.com
Web Site Address: http://earth.prohosting.com/mitadc

If you have any questions, please read the rest of this email, it answers most
commonly asked
questions.

///////////////////////////////////
Question: What comes with my account?
Answer: Here's what you get.

50 MB's of disk storage space
Personal cgi-bin access
1 FTP account to upload your web pages
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

///////////////////////////////////
Question: How do I create my web site?
Answer: You have two options for creating your web site.

Option 1: You can use our web based web site creation tool. To access this tool,
you will need to log
in to our web based site administration utility located at:
http://freeadmin.prohosting.com

Option 2: You can design your pages on your computer using any standard HTML
creation utility (e.g.
Microsoft Frontpage/etc), and then upload them to your account via FTP (File
Transfer Protocol)
ProHosting recommends that you use Cute FTP, but any standard FTP client will
work.
You can obtain this and many other ftp clients at http://www.tucows.com

Here are a few key points to remmeber when uploading your web site:
* You should be connecting to earth.prohosting.com
* Usernames and passwords are case sensitive. Your username is always
lowercase.
* Your default web page needs to be named one of the following (in all
lowercase letters):
- index.html (standard)
- index.htm (standard)
- index.cgi (if your main web page is a perl CGI script)
- index.shtml (if your main web page has server side includes)
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
i use the ftp client above but it won't connect.....
