Laptop prob---kb keys dead---remote kb works---

The---d i o p o r y---keys wont work and my friend insists its software related---nothing has been spilled on the kb and a remote kb works fine---Win98 NEC Ready 440T---slightly used, unabused---
He hasnt had anything odd happen lately, this is all new--
any ideas as to what caused it???

He wants me to do a complete format and reinstall---
Seems like a broadsword attack that wont cure things...
Anyone have any idea at all?
