converting .mov file

hey all,
been looking for a while and trying things. Need to convert .mov file to avi or windows media. Would like something that would be good on websites. This is just for family, personal use, so something free, or close is preferred.
Tried a few free ones, Bink/smacker seemed the best, but most of the time it lost the sound.
any ideas, or experience with other stuff?
thanks,
dragonb

Some Quick Time Movies have audio copy protection. A solution for it to download the application Total Recorder 3.0+. After starting this application you must press the recording button and start your Quick Time Movie. Total Recorder will only record the sound that come from the Quick Time Movie. After recording, you have to save it as wav and multiplex it for example with TMPGEnc.

well, will have to do it that way. thanks
