networking woes!!!!

ok so far the network has ran well today i decided to hook my brothers windows98 based rig to the network i made my cables plugged him up. all the lights came on. but when i try to ping from me to him or vice versa i get nothing. would the workgroup have something to do with that. the names of the workgroups match but is it case sensitive. anyone know why it wouldnt be working. like i said all the lights are on so i dont believe its the cable or the cards.

does the win98 have a ip from the router?

i got it set to auto select. just tried pinging again and it got something on 2 of the attempts tried again and all 3 failed. should i redo the cables?

goto start> run> type winipcfg. do you get a 192.168.*.* as an ip?

its the darndest thing it came up as 192.168.0.122...theres only 4 ports on the router

ok hit renew and and it gave me some kinda 169. something mess that aint even right. what do i need to do to get this going

Sounds like your router's DHCP might not be wanting to release an IP to the machine ... might check that out - or try manually assigning it an address in the router config.

manually assigned stuff...but its still doing the funky thing. when i ping 192.168.0.1 it'll get info the first attempt then the next 2 it times out. i triead again and it pinged fine. did it again and i got nothing. pinged again and i got 2 good infos and one time out. what else could it be?

is it a premade cable or homemade ? also did you get the router to renew the IP.

its home-made.....i guess i got the router to do that.
