Burning freezes computer

Hi, Whenever I launch any burning program, such as Nero Burning ROM, Ez CD Creator, Clone CD, etc. my computer will freeze about 90% of the time, at random times during the program too. I can get by without freezing in Nero by having my CD-RW open until the very last end before pushing the BURN button. However in software like Clone CD I cannot get by with anything, it just freezes in the beginning at all times. When I DO burn, no errors, no coasters; just perfect burning. I've upgraded all the burning programs such as NERO (Which came with my cd-rw btw) to the latest versions, I even upgraded my firmware on my drive.

Here's what I know for sure is not wrong: RAM is good, I've treid different chips, different slots, still the same. It keeps on happening even after multiple Low-level formats, OS re-installs etc. In Linux burning (or however much of it I was able to configure) works awsome.

Hardware:

Lite-On 16x10x40 LTR-10162C burner
Asus A7A 266 with ALi Magik chipset, 384 MB PC133 RAM, 1.2GHz T-birdie. A CD-ROM drive set as slave, CD-RW as master on the secondary IDE. DMA enabled on Hard drive, and CD drives. (with DMA disabled system is very slow during burning).

Software:

Any burning program
Windows 98se

it doesn't freeze while burning, it freezes while using the programs, like choosing which files to burn, settings for burning, anything, just not during burning.

Make sure there are no other programs running in the background such as DC projects, file sharing proggies, etc.

With all those burning softwares installed , sounds like there's a conflict brewing in the background....maybe ???? Nero 5 seems to work ok for me.

Kill ALL background proggies before burning, including those you listed.

I also remember hearing a while back that Nero and EZ CD Creator don't play nice together on the same comp. I'm not sure if that's an issue with the newer versions of those programs.

hmmm, I will try to kill all of the proggies then, I don't have more than one proggie installed at one time, so I don't think that there are any software proggies, might it be some driver issue in win98?....I guess we might never find an answer to this...

Dang forgot all about this one. Do you have a proper ASPI layer installed? If not try downloading ForceASPI from here: http://aspi.radified.com/
