Sluggish performance

I have a fairly new PC. 2.4ghz, 512 megs of RAM, intel mobo....this thing should fly. Running XP Pro.

The dam thing is sluggish. It seems like it's busy doing things in the background.

Does anyone have some suggestions to figure out why the PC seems sluggish. I've done the obvious things like defrag, cleaned out temp files etc.... I would love to get a list of things to do and a list of setting that will ensure performance is maximized.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Go into services and make sure "Indexing Service" is disabled. It indexes the hard drive when it thinks the PC is idle. It's supposed to make searches go faster. I don't know. I rarely ever need to do searches.

Also go into Task Manager and see what programs are running. Then what processes are running and what %'age of CPU time they're using.

You may have picked up a bug or a piece of spyware or it could just be Windows.

go to start, run, type msconfig and see what you have start up with winxp

my favorite tweak is go right click on my computer, click propertise, click advance, then preformance and click adjust for best preformance.

turns off all the eye candy
