network router

I am having no end of problems hooking a router into a network. I have a Linsky BEFSR41. I can be online until I hook the internet connection into the router and then everything goes sour. I have read many threads and tried different things but I AM UNSUCCESSFUL. i PURCHASED ALL NEW ETHENET CABLES BUT THAT DID NOT HELP. I am running Winxp on the primary and Win98 on the other. Linsky replaced the previous router but apparently the other one was OK. I am using the CD furnished with the router to set up.

first off dont use those setup cds. they are worthless

just open up internet explorer.

type in 192.168.1.1

type in your password and your are in the router to configure it.

to hook up the router

unplug the router, the modem and turn off the computer.

plug in the router and let it go thru its load up stage

then plug in the router

when all the lights are one (which should take a second)

turn on the computer

then access the router page, click status and see if you are getting a ip address from your isp. if not click DHCP renew

are you using DSL or cable?

Have you been able to access the router configuration from your browser (http://192.168.1.1)

What have you tried to do so far.

Do you have windows setup to automatically detect the IP?

Goto Start --> run --> type "cmd" and then type "ipconfig /all"
You should see an IP that is something like 192.168.1.100 and the default gateway should be 192.168.1.1 (assuming you havent changed the IP of the router)

The more info you give us the more we can try and help

Edit---

ops guess im way too slow

Well to answer both questions.

Go into your browser, and in the address bar simply type "http://192.168.1.1" and press enter. 192.168.1.1 is a local address and should be the address of your router. What you are doing is accessing the configuration of the router. It looks just like a webpage, except u can edit options and stuff. If you are connected to the router properly (you dont need the internet to be working to be connected to the router) you should be prompted for a username and pass. By default there is no user and the password is "admin"

If you are unable to connect to the router it means your computer isnt connected to the router properly...

What I was talking about with the run --> cmd thing is just how you open the command prompt
What OS are you using? I know that in XP you can get to it by Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Command prompt.

This will take you to a DOS-like prompt. Simply type "ipconfig /all" and press enter. This will spit out all the network data for your computer, so we can see what might be the problem and help you more.

network router

I did go to the browser and enter the numbers but I don't come up with a web page so I am stopped at this point. I did go to ipconfig/all and that worked very well. I am using an XP. As soon as I connect the modem to the router I lose internet connection. I must be doing something wrong but I don't know what. I will be back tomorrow afternoon or evening. You have a wealth of knowledge and thank you for sharing with me.

network router

I get an address of 192.168.1.1. I cannot seem to get an internet connection thru the router. I had to unplug from the router to send this message.

Is that the address that your NIC was given? Normally that should show up as the gateway.

Could you show us a copy of the whole IPconfig so we can see more detail

Seanmark,

Do the ipconfig /all again. This time right down the whole listing and post it here. I know its a pain to do that but it will give us good information on the status of your home network with the router.

Do you have DSL or Cable as your broadband connection?

To help you understand better what the router is actually supposed to, read below.

When you sign up with a broadband ISP, you are basically part of their network. In order for this network to work they have to assign you an IP Address. This IP address is known as the WAN (Wide area network) ip address. Now if you do not have a router the ethernet cable from your cable (or DSL) modem will connect directly to your ethernet adapter in your PC. Connected this way your ethernet adapter will be assigned the WAN ip address from your ISP. The bad thing about this is that ther are these things called ports that your pc uses for different things depending on what you do as a user. Most of these ports are open by default when the operating system is installed. So a bad person can effectively find open ports on your pc and try to access your files or do whatever. This is where the router comes in. When you stick it in between your modem and your pc, you are blocking all access to the ports on your pc from the internet, unless you specify in the router setup that you want it to pass certain ports. By default the router blocks all ports. Now the router has a WAN connector that goes to your cable modem, and 4 LAN (local area network) connector that go to your pc's. Your router is like a transition zone between networks. The LAN and the WAN. So the WAN side of the router is assigned the ip address from your ISP an the LAN side ASSIGNS ip addresses to your pc's automatically. The ip addresses used on the LAN side are private ip addresses. Anyone with an office or home network will use private ip addresses. The linksys router has the ip address 192.168.1.1 assigned to it automatically. And the router will assign your pc the ip address 192.168.1.100. If you were to connect a second pc it would get the ip 192.168.1.101 assigned to it. The beauty is that multiple PC's on the LAN side can all use the internet through the one IP address given to you by your ISP, and at the same time have a firewall blocking all the ports from hackers.
