Celeron 333 - a Fan

i have a Celeron 333 mhz processor and am running it as a server. to attempt to make it quiter could i remove the fan that is connected to the heatsink. its only a small 40 - 50 mm fan on it. as it is a server it wont be under too much stress as the most i wil be doing is maybe running a webserver or just downloading with it

Those old CPU fans don’t make much noise at all. But anyway a friend did remove his old fan
but replaced the heatsink with an over sized one & it works fine. But if you can just yank the
fan & leave the stock heatsink, that could be iffy.

Yes I agree with CatScam, I've seen some PII's with an oversize heatsink instead of a fan/heatsink. I saw a PII 450Mhz with this setup.

well, more than likely your Heatsink was designed to be "efficient" with that fan on it, so when you remove that fan, its going to be too hot for a processor, and when under load at any point in time, it will take many times longer for that heat to passively dissipate. hence the term: passive heatsink.

if you get an oversized heatsink on that processor, it might be enough to actually work safely, even under load. I have had a couple of K6-2's that ran on passive heatsinks pretty good.

its just up to testing under many variables really. no amount of speculation will guarantee its effectiveness unless you test it first.

good luck!
