Cannot see other computers.

I'm on a lan now, for my internet access at college. I bought a linksys router/4-switch with firewall and I need to make a network for my two computers behind the firewall. The problem I keep coming up to is that after I finish using the network setup wizard, and try and see the computers on the network, it tells me I'm not authorized to do so. I believe that my computers are looking out past the firewall and getting its information about the basic network (the college has no security whatsoever) from the college instead of the settings I made. That's why it tells me I don't have the clearance to access my own network. Both computers are using Windows XP. I posted this a while back in the networking board but got no help whatsoever, so I'm posting it in here, hoping that someone knows about this. I've disabled the DHCP on my router and assigned static IPs to each of my computers as well, but it doesn't help one bit.

Ok...first of all don't use the network wizard. I would set it up manually seeing that you aren't getting the IP through DHCP.

To do this go to the Network Connections and right click on your LAN connection. Select properties and scroll to find TCP/IP. Then click on it once and selet properties for this. Now enter in the IP address that you want your comp to use from your router. The subnet mask is usually what is in there by default. Then enter in the ip address of the router into the default gateway. Then in the Preferred DNS server type to ip address of the router again. Then click ok, and ok again. You should be hooked up to your router just fine and dandy.

Now in regards to your question. You need to make sure that you aren't using any other firewall software. If you are you need to open up port 139 on it for incoming and outgoing connections. This is for the netbios protocol which is for sharing.

Thanks for the reply. I did all that you said, and its still doing the same thing. I am able to use the internet through my router, and had manually configured it like you said above already because of the static IPs. The exact error message I'm getting when I try and see my workgroup computers is:

"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

Well, I can't see my other computer on the network but, it shows up mine so what I do is just type\\{Insert Computer Name Here} and it will connect to it. That might help.

Or here is an example as I use on my computer.

\\SERVER
