I've found US Robotics external modems to be the best.

I reccomend US Robotis and Lucent. If you want US Robotics they are very expensive but, Lucent (it's made by AT&T) isn't too pricey. A couple of months ago I had one but, I sold it.

If you want a great value, look in the Deals section "Two External Modems < $20. at the Geeks". See my review of the Cendyne/Amigo/3Net in the User Reviews on TIMO.
. The Zoom/Hayes (same company) externals are Lucent based and I never could get either of them to stay connected through a long download. I tried all sorts of init strings and sugestions from Zoom tech support to no avail.
. While it takes some major noise to kick my Rockwell/Conexant based units off. People in the house often pick up an extension phone while I'm on line and these usually just breeze on thru. My previous was also a Rockwell based v.90 unit from Best Data.
. If you really want the best, it is probably still the USR Courier v.Everything. It's been a looooong time since I've seen a good comparative review of a slew of modems. They just aren't exciting any more...

US robotics is very good but it's not really that necessary to spend that much. $20 is the ideal price for a good modem. anything cheaper won't work (from experience).

Yep, USR modems are my favorite brand also. I've used Diamond modems before and they are very good also. I was about to say that their driver support was crappy after Sonic Blue aquired Diamond but lookie what I found! LINK

Best Data Products Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of analog and broadband communication products, today announced it has acquired assets of Diamond Multimedia?s communication division from SONICblue Incorporated, including business assets, product inventory, trade names and trade marks, and other intellectual property. Under the ownership of Best Data, Diamond Multimedia will re-launch the complete line of its popular SupraMax modems.
