HP and Compaq breaking up?

Silicon Valley is reporting that the rumors regarding an HP-Compaq break up may be coming true.

I just wonder which analysts thought one poorly performing company's merger with another poorly performing company would result in a profitable company (thinking of AOL-TW).

I wonder what will happen to the two companies if they do split up.

If it does happen it could be for the better. Maybe Compaq might get some decent products then but, the down side is that people lose jobs. :\

I think it wouldnt matter if they split up or they dont, the products would probably stay the same, but the bad thing is what embj metioned : People loosing Jobs

Why did they even join together?

Actually Compaq servers are a big thing for Compaq. That is one of the reasons HP bought them.

They're still propietary but when you manage a couple hundred servers you don't want pieces and parts from all sorts of brands and you want one company to talk to.

If you think about it, the merger killed jobs. The split would create jobs as they will have to fill no longer duplicated jobs.

--- edit ----

there's no word of HP and Compaq splitting up in that entire article

They're talking about splitting out the printer division.

Quote:
Steve Milunovich, who follows big computer companies for Merrill Lynch, said he thinks HP will have to spin off its printer business or separate its consumer business from its corporate business.
Where is Compaq in that sentence?!!?

Since my town has an HP AND Compaq headquarters, this isn't a good thing.

I'm with vass, the merger is discussed but not in the context of a split. This article is about a spinoff of the printer division.

Anyway, even IF they ever decided to split up, HP and Compaq want us to know it's not our fault and they still love us VERY MUCH
