Outdoors Please help! Win XP install problem..

I am at my wits end on this. I am putting together a PC for my sister. Here are specs:

Chaintech 7KJD MB (NEW)
AMD Athlon 1.333 Ghz Socket A 266 Processor (NEW)
512 DDR PC2100 RAM
60GB Maxtor 5400RPM HD
56X CD ROM (NEW)

When installing WinXP Pro, I get as far as “installing network”, “Setup will complete in approximately 32 minutes”. From then on it just hangs there and goes nowhere for hours.

I even grabbed my WinXP Home CD and tried from the beginning, and SAME RESULT! I have tries swapping drives, CD drives, took the NIC out, same thing EVERY TIME! The memory modules are good as I pulled them from another working machine.

Could there be some incompatibility problem with this MB or processor? I am really stumped, never had this happen. Please help!

I'd run www.memtest86.com on the ram to make sure it's good. Whether it ever worked on another system is not a good indicator. Some boards are pickier than others, but XP is the pickiest of all.

Ok I took out my memory that I added from the other machine I had, put the original 128MB module the barebone kit came with, and SAME RESULT! I just dont get this at all, why will it not pass this point in the setup?

That program runs before an operating system even loads - and does not need Windows to be run. It will have to be run for a LONG time though...at the least overnight.

you can either make a bootable cd if you have aburner, or just make a bootable floppy. It's definately woth a try, IMO.

I am very confident it is not a memory problem. I installed Win2K Pro without a hitch on this machine 2 times! XP is just a no go for some reason.

Another thing...

I don't have a modem in this PC. Does WinXP require a modem to install? Just throwing this out to see if anyone had similar situation.

Upgrade?

Is this an XP upgrade or a clean install?
