I wanna learn how to do 3d modelling

Hey all,

As the subject says, I wanna learn how to do some 3d modelling. I've got access to Lightwave 7.0 & (i think) Maya 4.5...

1. which do you think would be better for me to use?

and

2. Where can i get some tutorials for someone starting with absolutely NO IDEA what they are doing?

I'm hoping by the end of the year i will be able to make a half decent looking 3d model of my car... Atleast thats what i'm aiming for... If i don't quite get there it will still be a good learning experience anyway... And yeh eventually i will get it...

So yeh, any and all hints, tips etc... would be appreciated...

Thanks!

JayMan

3ds max, maya, light wave all have tutorials under Help. They will get you started.

Pick a program. One program. I'm sitting here with brain melt down as I am learning maya and 3dstudio max at the same time. Eventually I should figure which one I like best and stick with it.

When I figure wich one I like best, I'll buy the book. I have a friend helping me with maya. She used it in school.

Maya $6,998
3dStudio Max $2,300

With these kind of price tags, I'm hoping I like the 3ds max.

Cheers!

Maya is more commonly used in the 3D design field for games n' such

cinema 4D might be easier to start with

n' honestly, i wouldn't suggest u to pay that much for tryin' it out. download the trial versions 1st....

That's the price for Maya Unlimited. Maya Complete (what I have) is $2000. Complete is the same as Unlimited except it lacks Fur, Cloth, Fluids and Maya Live Match Moving (matching 3D stuff to live action).

I've just looked on Discreet's site and 3DS MAX 5 is $3105, one reason I went with Maya was because it's the cheapest (of the expensive ones).

I can't offer any tips but I've got links:

...sniff... wellllll...

if'n you have access to Lightwave 7.0... JUMP BOY JUMP!!!! you can get it upgraded to 7.5b for free from Newtek.com [smooooth update indeed ]

Now if you TRULEY want to learn lightwave, go out and just annihilate about $200 on books from Dan Ablan <- he is a terrific teacher through books and you cannot get bored reading it, he actually explains many complex terms in layman form to where that even idiots could enjoy a chapter or two.

I purchased one of his books : Lightwave [6] and it taught me about 75% of everything i know about modeling, the other 25% coming from tinkering and some internet plundering, and of course reverse engineering.

and YES, Dan Ablan's books start from the ground up, generally moving someone from novice to experienced in only 1 book [about 600 pages]

Im just now consuming my 5th book for modeling and my learning rate is exponential, every day more and more, at incredible rates. My imagination is just exploding at all of the possibilities, quite lightly put, it would be a valuable investment if you truely want to pursue the career.

final note, lightwave comes with the Fur, Fire, Water, Inverse Kinematics [character animation through "bones"] basically any particle based engine being called "hypervoxels".. sweet stuff.

oh and if you plan on making anything "stunning" get a better computer... preferrably a dual Xeon...

Thanks for all the links guys... I'll be sure to check them out...

Not really looking at doing this as a career, just doing it cuz i think it would be cool to learn how to do... Eventually if i get good enough then yeh it would be great to get in to...

Man, after just tinkering around in lightwave i already feel in over my head!!! lol maybe i should look into actually being taught rather than trying to teach myself...

Yeh i done alittle work with 3dstudio about 4-5 years ago in one of my classes at school. The tutorials with that were great...

unfortunatly i don't have access to 3dstudio, and i havent been able to find any included tutorials with the lightwave install i've got access to...

Would probably actually prefer to learn 3dstudio cuz i might remember some of the stuff i was doing back in school... but yeh i don't have access to 3dstudio max... doh!
