getting rid of GRUB and installing winXPpro?? help please
I had previously installed redhat 9 on one of my computers at home. last night, i decided I didn't want it on that computer, so i totally repartitioned the hard drive and reformatted it. however, now i'm in some permanatly rebooting thing where the computer tries to access something called GRUB. I cannot figure out how to remove it and i'm completely at a loss here. can anyone help me out?
if you install WinXP it will be more than happy to wipe any traces of linux off of it for you.
Make sure you set it in the BIOS to boot from CDROM first. It sounds like its still booting to the HD.

that's the problem... I have wiped the hdd clean several times...
i even used ptmagic7 to do a low level format of the drive.
however, when I install win2kpro, after it does all of the setup stuff, it needs to reboot the computer.... at this point, i go directly into the permanantly rebooting phase...
You're not resetting the Master Boot Record (MBR), you need Fdisk to reset it for a Microsoft OS. Track 0 Sector 0 on Drive 3 (Hard drive C in assembly terms contains the program that loads the master boot record and transfer control to it.

As Wolfreakyn said you'll need the fdisk utility, just boot into a DOS prompt with a 98 boot disk and do fdisk \mbr, this should wipe aout Grub out of your MBR and let you install WindowsXP with no problems. This is weird since like vas said Windows installation will do this for you . Anyway hope this helps .
thanks guys. I was getting really frustrated with this. I tried another fresh installation last night but to no avail.... anyway, i'm sure this'll fix the problem. I'll try it again this afternoon.
No problem
Such simple things that I forget:
Linux uses the / for directories and a - for options(switches in windows)
windows uses a \ for directories and a / for switches(options in Linux)
I'm always having to stop and think about it.
