Move over knoppix!

I came across Dyne:bolic a few days ago and finally got around to burning the ISO. It is for my children but I thought I would boot it up on my machine and check it out first. I mean, why let them have all the fun? Right? Well, all I can say is that Dyne:bolic absolutely rocks!!!

Wanna give it a try? Go to:

http://www.dynebolic.org/

It's like a 480MB download, so, not quite as big as knoppix. Have fun!

Hahaha, from the website

IMPORTANT: do NOT use m$ internet xploder to download the iso, it works bad and breaks the file: use mozilla or something else.
So what about it is different? I am downloading it as we speak and will try it out.

It has that muse capability right out the box. It is supposed to be a multimedia dream box right from load. I have to admit that I have not gotten that far into it and my boys will be the true test. But, it set my machine up perfectly in about a tenth of the time that it take knoppix to do it and the default Windowmaker GUI is pretty kewl--IMHO.

Oh, the nest option to save your config files is really convenient. It has options to use a floppy or a USB pen drive but they are not yet enabled in the beta version. All my partions are available to me on the desktop (knoppix does this as well) and it found my usb smart media card reader and mounted it automatically.

Well I actually got around to burning the ISO today and it is pretty slick. Alot of nice apps on there.

To my delight they actually made WindowMaker not half bad There is also an option to switch to fluxbox in there as well.

Overall it is quite fast and has a lot of Multimedia Apps. (View, make and edit of each type, Music, Video, and Image).

the only thing it lacked was DVD ripping though I can't imagine how long that would take on a CD Based distro

I tell you what, these live cd versions are getting better and better. They are no a doubt a great tool to introduce Linux to someone. Knoppix was the first Linux version I ever tried and I have not booted into windows in two weeks now. Of course, I loaded Slackware 9 for speed, but, Linux was foreign to me until I was able to try it out without making a significant commitment. A few minutes of my time and a ten cent cd-r was worth it. My boys now run Linux exclusively. And, I can say that it makes me sleep allot better knowing that I do not have to worry about viruses on their machine.

lastly, it makes a great diskless workstation. I put together a web surfer/ email station in the house here as a spare if someone needs web access and the other two are being used. I did it all with spare parts but I did not have a hardrive. You hardly know the difference when surfing the web and checking your email.
