Is Divx 5.1 worth getting?
I have heard that this new version of the codec decodes movies better + there were some other good things. But the problem is is the only free version for download comes with adware and I dont want to risk it unless this codec improves on quality or is really worth getting.

If you are seeking maximum MPEG-4 decode and playback quality, then forget about DivX Network's resource hungry offering. Too much overhead, plus the DivX routines often insert an extreme amount of postfiltering to avoid already undetectable blocking artifacts, thus lowering overall detail.
I highly recommend ffdshow. It is thoroughly optimized and offers the most configuration and filtering options of any MPEG-4 decode engine. http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...group_id=53761

Robert Richmond | so this will decode my divx media files rather than divx and it will decode as better quality?
so if I install this I should remove my divx codecs? or will this take priority over decoding?

ffdshow provides a checklist of codecs it can take decode priority for. Just select all the DivX related codecs in the list, then you should be good to go. You can unselect each to return to the default DivX decoder.
As to settings, that is more of a personal choice. If you are unfamiliar with video processing, then start out with the post filtering options. Try the presets on the slider, I believe you will like the results. I like maximum post filtering with ffsdhow, but I like a soft picture. Use less filtering to keep fine details, though use enough filtering to remove blocking artifacts. Set automatic quality control to intelligent limit filtering during high CPU utilization.
Another nice option is the resize filter. Use it when upscaling video during playback instead of the simple options offered by most media players. Just specfic the size you want, leave the other options alone. Under the subheading of settings, I recommend using the Bicubic resize routine if you have a fast processor. Bilinear otherwise.
Otherwise, check out http://forum.doom9.org for more filtering ideas.

I use the native ffsdhow installer, but I believe this should be the same for you.
Find ffshow on your start->programs list. Click configuration. Find the tab marked codecs. This will give you a list of various codecs ffsdhow can decode and process. Click on the DivX codecs, then apply. Disregard and leave the "Use XviD" option blank, as it is not needed anymore.
On a similar note, if you ever want to use the DivX decoder, then simply uncheck the DivX codecs, then click apply.
ffdshow is a complete video filtering suite. You would be surprised at what you can accomplish with the various filters, especially when dealing with poor source material, such as extremely low bitrate encodes.

Appears so. Just opt for the latest alpha version when downloading, as it has been months since a stable release was published. The alpha releases are usually perfectly stable and moderately tested, but they do include newly modified code.
