Help me with ATI/Nvidia hierarchy...?

Basically what I mean is this.

I have absolutely no clue about video cards anymore.

About a year ago it was simple..you just picked Nvidias highest# card and it was the fastest...such as Gf3 was faster than gf2..and GF4 ti4600 was faster than a ti4200 etc.

Well now with ATI holding top spot it is more complicated.

Plus the geforce FX series is confusing cuz I know that certain ones of that series are dogs and some are good. 5200? 5600? 5800? 5900?? huh? 58 sucked and 59 is ok, is that right?

So here is what I want, hehe. Some sort of very simple chart as far as the order of the fastest to slowest cards etc.

In other words I see on pricewatch cards from ATI 7000 to 9800...but I have no clue how they compare relatively to nvidias cards.

For instance is a 7000 similar to a GF2 or GF3??

Is an 8500 comparable to a GF3 Ti200??

What is the relative difference in strength of a 9200 to a 9500 since the 9500 is twice as expensive??


Is there any kind of broad chart online somewhere for this stuff??



In other words for cpus it would be vaguely like this from top to bottom

P4 3.2ghz 800fsb
XP 3200
Celeron 2.2ghz
Duron 1.3 ghz
P3 800Mhz
P2-450Mhz
K6-2 400mhz

etc

BTW, a significant portion of the professional 3D graphics community consider the 5900 Ultra to be king of the hill right now due to its superb flexibility for per pixel operations. The 9800 Pro receives more press and overwhelming praise because it offers a much better cost-to-performance ratio, especially for gamers.

Well Im a little behind on vid cards, lol. So the fx5900 snuck out while I wasnt looking I guess.

If I were a gamer I guess it would be easier to keep up with.

I am not really a gamer either. While I keep up with graphics cards, it is only from the perspective of learning about 3D hardware engineering. And even for a person reading plenty of reviews and product announcements everyday (like myself), the near endless selection of similarly named cards is becoming difficult to keep track of; almost to the point of being ridiculous.

My requirements are support, not performance. For example, I care little for frame per second rates in popular games, though I definitely care what specific OpenGL and DirectX rendering options a card supports in hardware.

yeah...see if a person doesnt know...and he sees a price on a geforce fx something-or-another..lol...he may end up buying a fx5200 which looks pitiful.

Confusion is what ATI and nVidia hope to accomplish with their strange marketing strategies.

The GeForce-4 MX is the best example. In reality, it is a revised GeForce-2 MX design and shares little with the GeForce-4 architecture.

This is a significant departure from the GeForce-2 MX. It was based upon the same base architecture as the regular GeForce-2, though the hardware was scaled down to accomodate an entry-level price point.

All the average retail consumer saw was "GeForce-4"; the "MX" was tossed aside, the the person assumed they purchased a new generation video card instead of two year old technology.

Marketing, you have to love it.
