Speed Stream working as a ROUTER

Does anybody here know how do I do to make my SPEED STREAM DSL MODEM works as a ROUTER???

I have a 5 computer network and would like to put it in my switch to share my ADSL connection and I still need to know do I do to limit a specific portion of my band (512Kb speed / 4) for each computer?!?!

Any help will be welcome

I dont think you can do that. A modem just takes the dsl and turns it into one IP address. You need several IP addresses so you need a router.

And a switch is just a smarter version of a hub....so it doesnt mess with IP addresses, it just duplicates the ports etc.

you need to actually install a 2nd NIC card into your computer, then you can use your COMPUTER as a router.

Edit: posted in wrong thread sorry.

Might as well toss my two cents in here. You could use the 2 NIC method, but you would still need more NIC's or a hub for the other PC's

yup,
I have the speed stream and you can't do that. Like Fofo said: install a 2nd NIC in one computer and have the other computer run through it . it will be the router or get a hub or switch to do the same thing. I have 3 computers on a hub/router then from hub/router to speed stream for my connection.

Actaully technically some of the speedstream models (like the 5200 for example that I have) can be configured as either a bridge or a router depending on what firmware is flashed into them. But basically all ISPs including mine ship it with the bridge. I did try flashing the router firmware, but I couldnt get the settings to work so I just put the bridge mode firmware back on it and bought myself a real router

Really? I've got the SpeedStream 5200. I also have a Linksys router already so would there be any point in me doing that?

Thanks,
Sean

No problem SeanC...
The problem is that the link is in Portuguese ...
If you need some help remember that I'm from Brazil....

Note: I already tested it and it's really functioning, but ANY PROBLEM in your Modem is your responsability...
you will have to update the firmware from your Speedstrem, but you can test first to see if is really necessary to update the firmware. I have read that some modems from Canada and USA are already BRIDGE AND ROUTER...

SpeedStream 5200

Fnd

XIO Modem No IP Address

A mensagem é sempre a mesma.

May you help me?

PS.

Marco
