Windows theme graphix

How would i make stuff pop out and look 3d with photoshop like they do on the xp theme. Im tryin to make a yellowish theme but cant get it to look right.

is this kinda what you mean... all I did was draw one of the four shapes, fill it with a gradient... adjust the hue/saturation until I found the colour I wanted and applied an outer bevel...

duplicated the layer 3 times... adjusted the hue for each. flipped the two on the right vertically 180...

then when I was satisfied I flattened the image and removed the bevel from where I didn't want it.
