What? Socket?

Can somebody please tell me how to determine what socket my processor is? How do you go about finding out?

Thanks!

do you know what CPU you have first? AMD or Intel?

Do you know what motherboard you have? That can give you a clue on what socket cpu you have

is this a home built machine or a company built? (like dell gateway etc...)

If you pull out your processor, (although i would be extreamly cautious of this) sometimes the socket will have written on it, what type of socket it is.... and the mobo instruction book will tell you

My computer was bought from a high street store. Its processor is an Intel Celeron 700Mhz. I don't have a clue what type of motherboard I have.

Is this enough info.?

it all depends on what the motherboard supports

If you look at the first few screens when it is booting up...the screens that have the basic looking black backgrounds with white text....if you look at those screens...on the bottom of the screen there should be a bunch of numbers...usually on the left side of the screen.

They will look something like this 51-0102-zz5123-00111111-101094-AMIS123-P

or maybe shorter like this 2A5LEF09C-00

or maybe in between those lengths, lol.

Anyway they are called the "BIOS string"....they re really just a long string of numbers that identifies your motherboard.

So if you can get those numbers and post em up...we can tell you what kind of board you have and what the top speed processor you can use etc.

It is hard to get em all at once cuz they only stay up for a second at a time. So either you have to write 4 or 6 down at a time, then reboot....or sometimes you can hit the "pause" button on your keyboard to pause it right there....sometimes you hafta hit shift and pause. Then after it pauses and you get the info you hit "enter" to go ahead and let it boot.

So see if you can get those numbers and we can go from there.

Socket 370 can be one of three processors:

Celeron

PIII

or

Cyrix M-III
