Portability

I've decided to stick with a desktop for gaming and whatnot, but I'm looking for a decent laptop to bring to class, word process, and take advantage of the school's wireless network.

So battery life, size and weight are key.

The Toshiba 2000 - 750MHz p3m, up to 512MB RAM, 20gig HD, 2.6lbs, 0.6" thin, 16mb graphics, 2.5hrs on main, 6.5hrs on extended, mag alloy case - grabbed my attention

The other was a Sony R505 - 1.2GHz p3m, 512mb, 30gig, 4.4lbs, 1" thin, 48mb graphics, 3.5hrs, cdrw on dock.

Both have 12.1" screens which are fine for me, and both are refurb/used.

I don't really want to spend very much on it, so which looks better? Or any other suggestions? (Yes I know toshiba has the r100 centrino superslim, but it's 3.3k CAN)

Thanks all!

If you want the least weight then go with the Toshiba. You can't beat 9 hours of run time on battery.

Also look into the fujitsu laptops. They make some very nice laptops and battery life on some exceed 5 hours on single battery and others go up to 9 hours on dual batteries.

Yep, a 750MHz CPU can handle WinXP and OffXP. I would suggest getting as much RAM as possible to handle them. They're both memory hogs more then CPU hogs.
