Outdoors ibm 600e pains

Hello All:

I was wondering if somebody can provide me with some assistance.
I've got a IBM 600e PII 300, 128 megs and I can't seem to get into the config utlity using the standard F1 command key during boot.
It had worked fine until I replaced the HDD (with Ibm issue HDD) and added an extra 64 meg of ram (again IBM issue)
Now, when I boot the machine I get the mem count then a 163 error, I change the clock settings and click ok, the machine reboots, gets the mem count then goes to the "on/off" screen.
This is an IBM screen and the reference guide states that this indicates that the "IDE channel was changed", th correct the problem, "change the ide channel from 2 to 3" and reboot.
Of course, can't perform this function unless, I can get into the config?!?!? ARGH...

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks/

I did; but, all they said was that the laptop was not under warranty and that the laptop will "require service by an authorized IBM tech". Geeez, big surprise there.
So, if anybody has any advise, I'd appreciate it, if not, I guess I'll
file her in the dump!

Hey, I also have this problem. Please forward any info you get on how to fix this problem. Likewise I will forward any solutions I find. Thus far my research indicates we will have to get new motherboards in order to replace the bios. Doesn't seem right, but that is all I have found. Please keep me posted. Thanks!

Well:

I changed my Bios backup battery and bought a new main
battery, this solved my problem.

Good luck all!

To get into the Bios, hold down the F1 key while powering up the system untill you hear a beep. That should get you inso the Bios setup screen.

Yes, under normal situations, holding F! does work; but, I guess IBM and all their wisdom in their design, does not allow the config to be modified if the Backup Bios battery is NFG; thus, the cause of my problem. When I changed the BIOS battery, I was able to hit F! and setup the config.

Great, I will try that. I didn't think my battery was bad as it showed no signs prior to replacing the hard drive but I will try it. Thanks for responding. pcgal.
