Windows files are "different," updates don't pass logo test?

Hello. Some really weird things are happening on my AthlonXP WindowsXP system. I'll randomly get these messages asking me to insert my WindowsXP CD, since some files aren't recognized or something (will edit when I get the exact message again). I put the CD in and try it and it goes away... temporarily.

Now, when I try to Windows Update, it says the updates don't pass the logo test, and it fails to install.

Anyone else having these problems? I'll provide more detail when I get it. Should I reformat my OS partition and reinstall before it's too late? I'd do that now, but I'm having a hell week here at college and would like to avoid it if possible. Repair windows? Thanks for the help.

Well, I've had those same messages about unrecognized file versions...I just don't worry about it but, I don't have Windows Update problem. I do have SP1 installed though...have you installed SP1 for XP?

My XP had SP1 built in.

Here's the error message:
Files required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now.

Mine does too. I dunno but, I think that might be the problem? Maybe somebody can verify this but, what exactly happens @ Windows Update?
