This program I use called Fraps shows the frame rate in OpenGL and DirectX. When I watch a video in Winamp, Fraps doesn't show a frame rate. When I watch a video in WMP, it shows the frame rate in the corner as if it was in DirectX.
I think it does when you have hardware acceleration turned on.
I noticed that it took up a lot more CPU time when I disabled DirectX for an old game so it must have dropped into a different renderer. When I re-enabled DirectX everything was fast again.
Ok since you say WMP uses DirectX, would it make my computer better at playing videos if I put a faster video card in it? The computer I use for everyday stuff has an FX5200 in it; the computer next to the TV that plays movies only has a GF2 Ti200 in it. If I put the FX5200 in the computer next to the TV, would that computer run videos any smoother?

The video overlay should use directdraw (part of directx).
If your (what's gf2ti200, never heard of that model) plays movies choppy, there's something seriously wrong with your setup

Ok the operation is complete. The FX5200 really helped a lot. Now it runs all smooth . Even the conversation in the car in Pulp Fiction was smooth! woot
