Outdoors Dell Flat Screen going black!!!!

My Dell moniter flashes quickly (flickers?) black and then back to the normal screen. I'm still able to see outlines of windows but not well enough to actually use the computer. Sometimes it's just a really light flicker where the screen looks like it's shaking and other times it goes completely black for a period of time.

My computer (all from Dell) is only a year old and runs Windows XP.

It doesn't do anything to turn on or off the moniter and when I shut down the computer it flickers through the whole shut down process.

I really need some help!! Even if it's just guesses. My warrenty is done and I don't have the money to buy a new moniter!

First check the cables from the monitor to the computer, make sure the cat didn't chew into it, etc.

Did you add anything to your computer recently? If it is starved for power, it might affect the monitor or video card output. How much stuff is plugged into one wall outlet?

How about RFI (radio Frequency Interference). Are you laying your cell phone, Beeber, etc. on the monitor? Large speakers with large magnets next to the monitor can affect it.

Lastly, go to control panel/performance and maintenence/hardware tab/device manager/ and click on the display adapter, then right click on Properties. Should state that this device is working properly.

Next do the same for the monitor, same screen.

Both should have a troubleshoot tab, if it reports a problem.

If none of that works, may have to swap parts with known good ones, starting with the monitor, to isolate the problem.

Try changing your video driver. Uninstall your current driver and let windows install the Microsoft video driver. If that doesn't work then time to start saving $100.

Does it do it on another machine?

Is it a LCD/TFT? If so the back light may be on the way out.

Regards

how about checking the refresh rate? 60Hz is way too low...try 75-100Hz. Go to display Properties and check it there.
