having problems with my IE!!!
if anyone can help me i would really appreciate it.
heres what going on. first of all my computer for the most part works fine. but as i go onto some web sites and attempt to scroll down for example, my computer almost freezes. whats happining is my computer usage will instantly go up to 100%. from there i have to stop and wait a little bit and eventually it will go back down to something like 10%.
dont know if its a virus. ive scanned and nothing. ive also tried adaware, spybot, cleaned my system with norton clean sweep. and a few other things i cant remember. none of this has helped . i rarely have anything running in the background. this has been ongoing for a couple months now and has really put a hamper on my web browsing.
so if anyone has any thoughts on this matter it would be greatly appreciated.
oh and BTW heres what i got
pentium 3
866 mhz
500+ mb ram
XP pro
thank, Horseplay

is there by chance flash on any of these pages that gets held up?
Or Java?
Maybe large images?
is this just any page, or some pages in particular?
Have you tried updating IE or reinstalling?

hey thanks for the fast reply....
no flashes.
well pretty much any page but the more thats on it the more it will easily slow down. for example as i scroll on the page that im typing on right now its ok, not much on it. but if theirs like a whole page of replys, then it will slow down big time as i scroll.
updated my IE? well ive recently updated windows, that goes hand in hand right?
also can i reinstall IE without reinstalling windows?
on a side note i also have a MSN browser. and when i use that i get the same results. so i guess in a way its not really IE related. i just dont know anymore. this is really frustrating.
oh and BTW im using SBC yahoo DSL if that helps any.

| http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/ie5repair.htm will show you how to repair I.E.
My other suggestion would be to check your Direct X by going to System Information.
Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, Tools in the upper toolbar and DirectX Diagnostics Tools.
The DirectX tab should show you at the bottom if you have any problem files associated with DirectX.
Next go to the Display tab and do the tests found on that panel.
If you want to get really cleaned up, get into Safemode and Device Manager and remove your Display Adapter. You'll have to re-install your drivers if you do this so make sure you have your software handy before you begin.
These ideas would give you a good start on a process of elimination.
Cheers!

hey beemer i tried some of your other suggestions with no success.
could you maybe elaborate a little more on removing my display adapter? like what is it, and by removing it what am i accomplishing. also what piticular drivers are you refering to and how would i go about re-installing them? sorry if these seem like really basic questions, but im still a novice when it comes to some computer diagnostics. as of now im about willing to try anything.
thanks, Horseplay |

Right click on 'my computer', select properties--click the hardware tab, then device manager--click the + sign next to Display Adapter--right click on your adapter (aka, video card) and select uninstall--then OK--then reboot. Your system will detect your video card again and you will need to install the drivers again.
I've attached a pic for ya...
BTW, Welcome to TechIMO!!!

Since you have WinXP and it has 10,000 native drivers on hand to install upon detection of hardware, chances are you won't need to manually install any drivers when you reboot your machine. Just answer any questions logically when Windows reboots.
If this is successful, you may want to do a little follow up on updated drivers possibly from the video card manufacturer. We can take care of that later.
Thanks Martoch for following this thread. Techimo seemed to be having a few diffaculties keeping up with the amount of traffic they were experiencing earlier this evening and I couldn't reach the site.
Cheers!

UPDATE:
just thought id get back to some of you who have tried to help me out.
well i havent tried to delete my display adapter. but heres what i did do and which to my suprise has helped TREMENDOUSLY!!!
being a new member and all, ive done some reading on this site and have learned alot to say the least. anyway what i did, was download the MOZILLA browser, and my computer works like a champ now. browsing is back to normal.
im SOOOO happy now. although i still wouldnt mind getting to the root cause of my IE problems. now im thinking because MOZILLA is working fine for me i dont think that my Display Adapter would be the problem. or would it?
if anyone has any thoughts on this please feel free to comment.
thanks, Horseplay.

I have thoughts.. IE breaks down regularly and refuses to repair itself.
I had a similar problem, whenever I wheelscrolled some specific sites the computer would slow down to almost full stop (now I know it's normal that wheelscrolling eats your cpu alot).
I didn't use the computer much for surfing so I let it be.
Alternative browsers are usually a good way to go around the problem.

I was going to say and suggest you to download Opera or Mozilla and give it a try but you were a bit faster than me Horseplay Im glad that helped and I have myself heard and experienced awful things with Internet Explorer, but I really don't mind since I use Linux (Mozilla/Konqueror) for usuall web browsing and e-mail checking. Its sad though that a browser can be capable of make your computer unstable. Im glad everything worked out with you!
