Kids 5 1/2" floppy????

I've just assembled a computer and it has an issue I've never come across before. It would not boot from the floppy. I get the message" boot disc failure, put a disc in the drive and hit any key"
Went into the bios and enabled 1.44 floppy and boot from floppy first. When I do that the computer stops after the ram is detected and quits. I had to boot from the CD to install the OS and the computer works fine but I have to disable the floppy and have it boot from the harddrive first and the Cd rom second. I don't really care if the floppy controller is screwed but was curious if any one else had something like this happen. I have a usb floppy I bought with my laptop , if i need it to transfer files. Any ideas ??? Thanks

PS when the computer is running with the floppy disabled , in My Computer , the floppy shows up as a 5 1/2" drive ?????????

Bad cable or loose cable. Try reseating the cable or changing it out. Bad floppy? I have had a bad drive and thought it was my cables. Change drives and everything worked fine.

Verify that the floppy cable pin one is connected properly to the back of the floppy drive and to the I/O \ Motherboard. Generally pin one is always closest to the floppy power connector, therefore the red stripe on the floppy cable should be facing the power connector on the back of the floppy drive.

There's also the setting in BIOS for "swap" floppy drive. It makes the 5.25 the A: drive and the 3.5 the b: drive or vice versa. Maybe it is set to swap...it should be set like this

swap floppy drive disabled

Also in the bios, make sure that floppy seek on boot is disabled. Check to see if there's a setting for "Warn if floppy missing" or something like that too.
