file trouble

i got a bunch of files and folders in different places on my hdd and for whatever reason they refuse to be deleted. they all say "blah is being used by another person or program". ive tried using cmd prompt to delete them but it doesnt help. is there a program out there that can wipe these files from my hdd without deleting other stuff, in other words without formatting? thanks guys!

boot into safe mode and try to delete them?

or restart and try to delete them, or load up the command prompt (not in windows) and delete them

Try this:

-Make a back-up empty folder and move everything you want to keep into that folder.

-Move the old folder with the offending files into the root directory of a drive.

-Delete the folder with the offending files

-Rename the back-up folder so it is no longer a back up

If the works, the issue was that the file names on the folders were too long and it wasn't being recognized as a valid file name.

When I had this issues, the files weren't actually being used, and I got the same error when I tried to delete them. It was just a Windows fluke.
