networking problem

Hey guys

I'm currently running Win2k Pro and I just ran some updates through microsoft. I just installed the new Direct-X 9 update, and when my computer restarted, my network connection would not connect. I tried re-installing the driver, the device.. I even tried re-installing windows (not a clean install). There shows to be no conflicts with my LAN deviece either. The system tray icon still appears, but just shows no activity. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what might be wrong before I go and do a clean install of Win2k. I have some software which I do not have the cd's to anymore which I would not like to lose, so I would rather not do a clean install.

I'm running

(don't have my mother board info on hand)
Celeron 1700
512 M RAM
Win2k Pro

Thanks,

Matt

is the network card on board?

i had this problem when i updated a while back with my server, i could not remote connect to it if my life depended on it. So i finally hooked up a monitor and looked the event log

(start> control panel> adminsitrator tools> event vewier)

see if any errors codes are coming up for network.

so i assume you cant connect to a webpage correct?

yeah, it's onboard, i'm no where near my computer a the moment, but I did check the event viewer yesterday, and there weren't an problems in it for networking, but there was for SMTP, but I figured that was just when I tried connecting through Outlook. And I can not connect to anything, not even any local computers in my house. I'm curently out of my house right now for internet access.

are you talking about DHCP here? have you tried using a static ip if you are hooked up to a router? got link lights on the nic? check to see if somehow the nic got disabled in bios(not likely)

you might want to try pinging the other pc's on the lan. if you try another network card and all else fails as well there IS a registry trick which i had to do which worked. the path is in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControSet\Service s\Winsock

heres the thread with the answer that worked for me. id only use it if everything else fails like it did for me.
