System Crashes running GTA3

I have a problem with GTA3, as mentioned above it crashes when running the display at any higher than 640x480x16, after a minute or so, but my problem is that until then it runs very smoothly (at 1024x768x32) without glitches or any stuttering.

i have installed the patch for v1.1 to no avail

my system settings are:

PIII 660 MHZ
320MB SDRAM
Aureal Audio 3d Sound card v2
nVidia Geforce 2 MX 100/200 64MB AGP 2x
Direct X 9.0b
Windows 2000 Professional

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I found a similar problem in another thread, but there was no solution and it was from 2 months ago so I have decided to re post this.
