Curious about MACs

I'm a windows man. I'll admit it and I'll also admit I know 2 things about other OSes jack and... err yeah... anyway... a friend came to me with a question that I have no idea if it's even possible but can you transfer files like mp3s and doc files over a network between a windows and a Mac computer? If that is possible how does one do it. I'm totally not familiar with Mac OS. I can use it but not well at all. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes it can be done ... I'm unsure how to go about doing it though as my exerpiences with the latest Mac OS is limited (it wasn't on a network)

PC MACLAN. This software allows the two to share files over a network. It installs on the PC, I believe. Then they can see each other and transfer files.

Yeah, its completely possible.
At home, i have pcs and macs.
All my macs are running Mac OS 10.2.4 and one Mac OS 10.3 beta. These OSes are compatiable with networking with PCs with no additional software, it has it all built in. These Macs can share files/receive files from windows machines. All you need to do is hit: Apple + K and it will search the network for all computers that are sharing files, including PCs. if you want to share files, go to: System Preferences -> Sharing -> Click on "Share with windows machines" (or something like that). It should work that way..
If you have a mac thats running, Mac OS 9 and below you need additonal software to communicate to Pcs. Software like DAVE or MacSOHO will make the Macs and Pcs communicate easily...
I hope this answers ur questions
thanks, paul

Okay that seems fine.. I(we) can SEE the other computers now but when I try to open it it gives me an error message saying username and password are invalid. I remember getting this too with 98 and xp and networking them... I forgot how I fixed it (if I did at all) the windows PC is running XP. Thanks for all your help.

Make sure you have file sharing enabled on both computers, then enable sharing on any particular files or folders you want to share.
Check in the properties of your network Control Panel applet to see if there's a username / password entered in the file and printer sharing options

BTW, PC's and Macs should be able to share files if both are running the same network protocol - TCP/IP being the obvious choice, since it's installed by default on PC's, and Macs (I presume) would also use TCP/IP to use the internet
