so im heading to school starting next week, i have cable internet and am curious, would it be profitable to start hosting web sites on my pc, i have an extra 450mhz computer sitting here and a 768/350k cable internet on all the time, how do you go about starting something like this up, is it something simple i can just set up and leave it...just me thinking here, feel free to throw in some comments...

350kbit upstream is not enough to host a very big website (traffic) ... it would have to be pretty low profile.

Well, yes, and no. If you've not done it before, I would shy away from getting clients..... just host your own sites for awhile..... alot more to the server end of things than you might think. Getting started is fairly easy though.

Mandrake will set up the apache webserver on install if you tell it to, not sure about the windows versions, but I know you can get apache for windows from teh GNUII iso, and it installs without a hitch and works great.... i've did that on a windows machine. If your hosting like small business or personal sites for people you know it will be okay. But I wouldn't host big companies and people halfway across the world. I have 500k upload and I host a website for me and a forum for a clan. So It's not much traffic and not a big deal.
