Outdoors Compaq presario with broken DVD/CD-RW

Hi all

Long time no see...

I have a slight problem.
I have a Compaq Presario 731 laptop with DVD/CD-RW combo drive which doesn't seem to work right. It's still under warranty but i cannot send it to the service point because i need it everyday (working for my master's degree). I can send it to service at the end of september but then the warranty will be off, and they can't do anything about it.

Now the questions: Should i get one new DVD/CD-RW drive for it or should i have this one repaired?
I have to buy a compaq one, or there are other company's drives that are compatible with it? If i get one it shouldn't be a problem istalling it, right?
I now have an external CD-RW drive hooked up in the USB slot. The drive is recognised at BIOS or from the operating system?
I mean if i have to format will i be able to use the external drive to install a new operating system or not?

Thank you all
Vangelis

Talk to the store manager. Setup a repair schedual with your retailer. Describe the problem to them. They should be able to fix it on the fly and have you take it home right away. Talk to them.

Cheers!

Funny...I have the same problem with my Presario X1000.....The DVD/CDRW isnt seen in Windows. Unfortunately I have no warranty. I have seen these drives for sale on Ebay....they arent that hard to change out...Be better for me to buy the drive new and install it myself.

It's nice to have the warranty. You get free stuff for a while if necessary. My old Compaq had a broken FDD and it had to be replaced with a Compaq FDD as it was proprietary. It was still under warranty as I had the extended warranty up to 4 years. It was in the 3rd year it went kaputz.

Cheers!

Ya! Extended warranty cost $118.00.

I paid $118.00 for a FDD....lol
It could have been a worse break down though. You never know.

Cheers!

dont know what it's like but laptopparts.com seems to have lots of parts and accesories but they are kinda high, like a dvd for a 731 is $100
