Athlons and 400 MHz RAM

Hello everyone,

Thinking of getting a ASUS A7N8X Deluxe with a Athlon 3000+

Will this configuration undergo noticeable performance increase with 400 MHz RAM (Kingston)?

I'm aware that the 3200+ definitely will, but not sure if the 3000+ will just require clocking the RAM down.

Thnxs

If not overclocked, benchmarks have shown that PC2700 (333mhz) will produces slightly better scores and performance. However, the 400mhz RAM gives you some leadway on overclocking and a possible upgrade in the future. I myself use Corsair XMS PC3200 with my A7N8X Deluxe and 2600+ (333mhz FSB)

I use the kingston hyper X 2x512mb sticks of pc3200 memory myself with the board.
It runs quite nicely and stable for this board. Unfortunatly it doesn't work with all types of ram, however this ram does work great in the asus mobo.
Telexen is correct about the scores, if you were to get a 3200+ amd athlon xp, you would see considerable performance if the board is version 2.0 that has the 400mhz fsb.
If I recall right, toms hardware did round up on the nforce 400mhz fsb boards and the asus a7n8x deluxe came out on top again.

the DFI Lan Party board and the Gigabyte 7NNXP got the top honors for all around best boards. The Gigabyte is obviously a great board - TONS of great features and it performed pretty well. The DFI, on other hand, must have won because of it's UV sensitive slots and components - because it did not do that well in benchmark comparisons.

Why dont you just lower the multiplier and up the FSB to 400mhz to utelize 400mhz FSB.

Through overclocking trial and error I have found that the CPU's speed will always be the same no matter what FSB and multiplier combination you use.

I overclocked my friends 1700+ and found that the maximum CPU speed using 400mhz FSB with these settings.
400mhz(200x2) FSB x 10.5(multiplier) = 2100mhz

Then I wondered if lowering the FSB and raising the multiplier would yeild higher CPU speeds. The highest I went was with these settings.
336mhz(168x2) FSB x 12.5(multiplier) = 2100mhz

Considering that both CPU speeds were the same I went with the higher FSB since higher bus has better performance than lower bus even with the same CPU speed.

Well, there ARE 400 MHz FSB 3000+'s. Newegg has em for $269. That would work.

This is, of course, if you don't want to overclock. If you do, then grab the 333 MHz FSB part, and have fun tinkering with the FSB.

Hey everyone...

Thanks for your help, being the careful individual I am I had already gone out and bought the stuff before awaiting replies... aaargh needed computer NOW.

In fact bought the 2600+ 333 FSB and the 400 Kingston, so good to know they work nicely with the Mobo (version 2.0 400 FSB support)

Other than that, got to admit I've never overclocked.... was thinking more of buying a faster one once prices drop. Suppose overclocking is a nonstarter with a boxed chip and I would need a better cooler... dont suppose Athlon sells you a nicer fan than they have to.

But, might try it out once I'm ready to accept a grilled chip.

Anyway, when I come home from work it gets built. Cant wait.

Thanks again!
