Dell Issues
I own a Dell Latitude D600. It came with windows 2k (a mistake because I was trying to save money, i get a free upgrade to XP pro from my college with a software bundle) and I upgraded to XP pro. This caused many problems which I ended up solving by doing a clean install of XP. I expected setup to reformat the hard drive but that option never came up in the setup. I continued the setup and installed windows XP again. Now I have a couple issues of which I am trying to resolve. First off, when I start up I get a screen asking me which os to boot with, Windows XP pro or Windows XP pro. I'm assuming that one is the old upgrade from 2k and the other is from my clean install. I tried one choice and it resulted in a normal bootup. The other caused an error saying it couldn't find a file.
My first question is this, how do I stop the computer from asking me this question. One works and one doesn't so I just want to boot with the one that works.
My second issue is with windows itself. It seems to be running very slowly (the fade in to the welcome screen where you put in your password is very slow, you can acutally see the colors being layed over one another). Also while in windows if i was to drag around a window, say internet explorer, it's very jerky. Scrolling is jerky as well. How can I fix that?
System:
Pentium M (not 4 M, just M) 1.6 GHz
1GB of ram
anything else you need me to find out about my system just ask, but those are just there to prove that I have the performace to run XP well.

Hi,
When I read that you were not able to format during the Windows XP setup, did you boot from the CD or did you run the installer from the Windows 2000 Desktop?
If order to format out, you need to boot from the CD. Check your BIOS settings to do this.
I think once you got the computer reformatted out, and reinstall Windows XP, everything will be set and all of those problems will be gone. I'm guessing that you have the Upgrade Version of the Windows XP Pro, you need your Windows 2000 cd inorder for the installer to check that you are upgrading... Once you got it running, go to the dell support site and download the drivers for this machine for Windows XP. (support.dell.com), then enter ur system id.
thanks, paul

XP comes off a network drive on our schools network. If we could assume that I can't reinstall windows XP is there any way to fix the problems I have. Because installing windows again is my last resort.

You need to remove the line referencing 2K in your boot.ini file. I'd back it up first.

Hey, is the server network bootable? I know that most of the 'newer' computers are capable to boot off the network... Have you tried that?

No i have not. I will remember that if it comes down to reinstalling windows xp.
Bill, in the boot.ini file there are two choices for me to remove. Either WINDOWS="Microsoft Window XP Professional"...
or WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"...
because i don't want to remove the wrong one im just giong to make sure... I remove the WINNT one becaus that was the XP installed from the upgrade. The WINDOWS one was from the clean install. Correct?

Ok, i have resolved the booting problem, thanks bill
Now I still have the same problem I have been having.
The window movements, if you drag a windows, are extremely jerky, scrolling is extrememly jerky. However, while i type there is no delay between my hitting the keys and the letters showing up. Should I reinstall the video card drivers? what would be causeing such performance problems? Also, if I delete a file it the little deleting window will hang at just barley finished for ever (that might be due to a very full recycle bin)
again, the thing iim interested in fixing now is the jerky window movements and jerkey scrolling.

Yup, that did it. I just reinstalled the drivers for my video card (ati mobility... blah blah...) and now the scrolling is much smoother, and the dragging of windows is also much smoother. Thank you all for you help, and sorry imac but i won't be booting from the network any time soon. And im not quite sure if it would work because to access the drive you need apassowrd and i think that might have gone alittle over my head.
again, thanks.
