Greetings Tekkies,
Awhile back I asked for help ID'ing a mainboard, which was identified as a Gateway 2000 a.k.a. "Mailman."

Initial guesses were of 'Hitman' but BIOS string indicates that this mobo has integrated audio and video, hence UAV, thus 'Mailman.'
I understand that Gateway has released a BIOS revision as recently as 06/28/2001, and wonder aloud if by flashing the BIOS update this motherboard could operate with an AMD K6-2/500 or 533 MHz CPU?
That's ultimately what I'd like to do with this board, due largely to the fact that it has the unusual quality of being able to support up to 3 digital sound inputs (e.g. from CD-ROM drives).
The problem between now and then is the refusal of this board to boot properly. Granted: When I got this board, it had no CPU, so I've dropped in an Intel 200MHz MMX.
Upon Boot, it does this:
-------------- begin POST -------------
AMIBIOS (C)1992 American Megatrends, Inc.
BIOS Version 1.00.07.DQ0t UAV
GATEWAY 2000 [logo]
Pentium(r) Processor 200 MHz MMX (tm) Technology
00XXXXXX KB
Keyboard...... ... detected
Mouse.......... .... detected
Harddisk installed ......... XXXXX
Floppy A: .......... installed
Disk I/O Error
Replace the disk, and then press any key
-------------- end POST -------------
It also has a habit of running about 10-15 seconds after bootup and then freezing. It doesn't matter that I have a bootable floppy in the A: drive. I have managed to get to BIOS setup and ensure the first boot device is the A: drive.
Any thoughts as to getting this machine to a state to where I can update the BIOS?
Thanks!
KJ
