Got My New Notebook!

I got my notebook this week! (actually, a family member's, I'm taking care of everything dealing with it)

It's a Sager 4060 configured as shown here: http://powernotebooks.com/configurat...2&model_id=238

Initial thoughts, it works pretty well. It's fast. It gets kinda loud once the fan kicks in and it runs pretty warm. Even the keyboard feels warm.

I can tell the Hyper Threading is working when I see 2 processors in Device Manager in Windows XP right? The boot screen only shows one.

If it does not show up as two in the Device Manager, try seeing the Hyper-Threading by clicking on Ctr+Alt+Delete and then click on the Performance tab. You should see two moving graphs showing processor use instead of one.

If you do not see it, then it is probably not activated in the BIOS. Did you install your own operating system? If you did then Sager would have shipped it with HT disabled since they don't know what you are installing, because it does not work with Windows2000 Pro. You will need to activate it in the BIOS before you install XP.

Also, you can go to http://support.intel.com/support/pro...yID/FreqID.htm and download the Intel Frequency Tester Utility that will tell you exactly what you have.

Thanks

It does show up as 2 in the Device Manager. I saw 2 graphs in the Performance tab of the Task Manager so it's Hyper Threaded.

I took it to a LAN party today, wow, this is thing is fast but it gets very warm.

Yes, a 3.06GHz processor produces heat...lots of heat. The trick is to keep the intake fan vents clear so they can draw in lots of air. Don't use it on carpet, the couch or bed because these will just block those intake vents. If you do want to use it in those places, please make sure you have it on a hard flat surface like a TV tray.

Also, as time goes by be sure to keep those fans, and the heatsink, clean. They tend to build up dust over time, so it will become more important in about 6 months to check them, and then every 6 months or so after that.

Yeah, I'll have to remember to check the fans every so often since I won't be the one who will be actually using it.

I wondering if there is a way to underclock the processor so it won't run so hot. I didn't see anything in the BIOS to do that.

Underclock the processor

In some BIOS you can underclock the processor, but if you don't see where you can set it to a choice of 50%, 37.5% or 25% then your BIOS won't let you do it. It only affects it when it is running on battery though.
